Problems with 6 week old baby sleep….

I am after some advice. I have a 6 1/2 week old baby boy and he only seems to sleep either in arms on us or cuddled up to us, as soon as we put him down he lasts about 5-10 minutes then wakes up crying. He sleeps really well when we’re out walking him. But in the day soon as I put him down he wakes. The nights aren’t to bad it’s mainly they days but at nights he does fall asleep but then wakes soon as you put him down but then sometimes he won’t. Would really like some advice please.         Laura leach

  1. Hi Laura,
Thanks for your post. Most babies do get comfort from rhythm and movement in order to settle to sleep as they were used to this in the womb. Your baby is very young but you can start teaching him to settle in his cot when he is drowsy but awake in the day by looking at his sleep cues.

Babies of this age will only really be able to manage 1-1.5 hours being awake. Sleep cues include staring into space, arching back, sucking fingers, frowning, yawning but should not be crying which is a sign of being over tired. Once you observe the sleep cues do give your baby cues you are going to settle him to sleep by a very mini routine such as changing nappy, songs and cuddles, darkening the room and then settling in the cot – you may need to stroke or pat in order to help him settle. Also please remember that under the SIDS guidelines if he is napping in a cot at home you need to be in the same room as your baby while he naps.

    Hope that helps.

    Best wishes
