10 month old waking at 4
Submitted by jessicawarne on Mon, 07/16/2012 - 07:05
My 10 month old is waking between 4-5 every morning.
I have done sleep training with her before and she has done really well, but in the past month she has gone back to waking up too early. She also still wakes for a night feed at around 10/11 every night.
She is on 3 meals and 3 bottles a day.
When she wakes at 4 i do controlled crying, this will normally last until about 5-5.30 until i give in and take her downstairs. She is wide awake and sitting up in her cot with no signs of going back to sleep.
She has a morning nap at around 8.30.
I am at a loss and don't no what to try, please help!
any suggestions welcome!!

You may have seen from my
You may have seen from my previous posts that early rising is the hardest problem to resolve but no impossible and I can give you some pointers that may well help with your situation.
1) First is to look at the amount of sleep your baby needs on average for his age. A 10 month old needs 14 hours in total and this can roughly be split into 2.5 hours in the day and 11.5 at night. Obviously this varies from child to child and if she has more at night will need less in the day.
2)early rising can be caused by too much napping which does not look like the case in your situation or it can be that she is not getting enough sleep at naps. At 10 months again on average the naps are split into 2 well spaced naps - a shorter one and a longer one. It seems that your baby's nap is quite early at 8.30am so I would try and delay it to at least 9am if you can and then offer another nap afer lunch. babies who are over tired can also wake early and then early nap can lead to early rising as they haven't finished the night sleep.
3)I would continue with the controlled crying for night wakings before 4am, 5mins,10 mins and then every 15 mins until crying down. Work out the amount of sleep needed from when she goes to sleep - if it is 7pm for example she will be ready to get up by 6-6.30am so if she wakes about 5am see if you can keep her in the cot as close to 6am as possible . Put books/toys in the cot when you go to bed to occupy her if she won't return to sleep.
4) i am sure you are doing this but make sure the room is lovely and dark. Lucy suggests blinds from

Hope that helps and good Luck.
